Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I was influenced by many of my own teachers while growing up. I witnessed what a teacher can do for a friend who didn’t have the best home life and decided that I want to be that for someone else too. Being a teacher can also mean that you are the students only stable adult in their life, that is what really drove me to become a teacher. I want to be the stability for everyone who doesn’t have that provided for them at home. Everyone needs someone to lean on!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I had a student who used to absolutely hate coming to school. He was very shy and timid at the start of the year. He struggled socially and academically. By the end of the year, with some help, he began to love coming to school. Seeing his genuine smile every day was such a beautiful thing. At the end of the year, he thanked me and told me, “you made me feel like I matter”. I see him in the halls and he’ll smile and wave, which helps me remember the true importance of teaching.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would love to be able to payoff a few bills that I have sitting on the sidelines. I would also like to revamp a few pieces of classroom furniture. I am a firm believer in comfort while learning, so I would love to continue adding to my flexible seating collection.
