Life’s too short to spend it doing something you don’t love. I decided to use my limited time on this marvelous blue marble doing something that challenges me (and nothing will challenge you more than working with middle school students!) Teaching and inspiring young people to be curious seemed like the best way to have a meaningful impact in this world, so here I am, slinging knowledge and instilling a lifelong love of learning. It might be the most important job in the world.

I recently had a parent pull me aside at school, which usually spells trouble, but this was not the case that day. She told me that her daughter really didn’t care much about anything in life (not surprising at their age) but she wanted to let me know that she recently began to show almost zealous passion for my class and science. She won’t talk about anything else. I had no idea that I had that kind of impact.

First, I’d be responsible and pay some medical bills. But after that, I’d finish the vintage trailer restoration project my wife and I have been working on for several years. We could take the grand road trip over summer break that we’ve been dreaming of where we tour as many National Parks as we can and visit all of our friends that have moved away over the years. I also promised to reserve some of it to take my amazing students on a spectacular field trip.
