Sangmin Pak

I love the fact that I can share my enthusiasm and passion of STEM with students who never saw themselves working and pursuing that field.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I always had a passion of teaching someone, but it wasn't my first option in career. After I got accepted to join NYC Teaching Fellow, a similar program to Teach for America for NYC residents, I started to realize how rewarding this career is. I feel very fortunate that I started out as a special education teacher because now my horizon has broadened and I have become a more empathetic person that focuses more on accessibility and inclusion.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

There is no single memorable teaching experience honestly. But one of the most memorable moments is when I organized our school's first ever solar eclipse viewing event. Students in my school had never participated in a STEM event as such. It was a great experience to have around 300 students and staff view the eclipse and just be in awe with the natural phenomenon of this universe.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would love to create more hands-on STEM opportunities for students by attending more amazing conferences like Space Exploration Educators Conference, allocating more STEM materials, and paying teachers to get trained on various NASA educational resources.
