Tell us why you became a teacher

During my middle school years, I lived in a homeless shelter, and school was always a safe place for me. My teachers supported me through science inquiry, hand-on engagement and being a positive role model, in my life. The 🍎 provided me the inspiration I needed to further my education and become the 🍎, that I am today. My career has been dedicated to being a positive & ethical male role model through hand-on scientific inquiry, mentorship and literacy for students in underserved communities.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I accepted a teaching job at a traditionally underperforming school, on the 8th grade state wide science assessment for Florida. The school had a 4%, passing proficiency rate on the previous year’s statewide science assessment. My students and I accepted this challenge and increased scores by 1100%, to 44% through hands on science engagement and literacy focus. The next year, my students and I increased science proficiency to 68%, which moved to school to 5th highest prof., in the city.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Currently, I am at the end of my dissertation phase for my PhD in urban educational leadership. The award money would be used to complete the rest of my doctoral studies, which could open up opportunities for educational leadership in my community. My teaching career has been dedicated to teaching, learning and service. The award money would be used to directly continue to support and strengthen education through leadership, literacy and science education, in Philadelphia’s urban communities.
