It seems so cliche to say, but I became a teacher because of all the teachers who sat at my desk before me. I went to the high school I teach at, and the legacy of the program and the teachers who made it that way was very important to me. No one cares more about what the program was or will be more than me. I also have a wish for change in the community in which the school resides, actively advocating for art and cultural opportunities for the young population of rural Veedersburg, IN.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceI had the chance to combine my passions for teaching, my community, and art history as the lead for the d’Arlier Art Show, honoring a local art expert who even restored the Mona Lisa. The show featured over 20 modern paintings from his collection, lost for 20 years, which I helped bring back to light. It was an incredible experience for me and my students, connecting us to our town's rich artistic legacy and giving them a deeper appreciation for art and history.
What would you do with the $25,000?I would invest the money directly into my program, updating our space and equipment to provide our rural, low-income students with opportunities to explore fine arts. Our cabinets are held up by duct tape, and new resources would allow them to create for years to come. Any remaining funds would start a research program with our local genealogy society, inspiring students to connect with and care about our community and its rich history.
