Patricia Reed

I love teaching knowing that I am a part of a person’s future as he or she steps out into the world of challenging successes and failures.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a Special Education Teacher because I always wanted to help others become the very best of whatever they could be in spite of their conditions and/or disabilities. Before and after college, Plan A was to major in Special Ed, join the Peace Corps, and work in an undeveloped country. I was on my way to fulfilling that dream until time to leave home and my father said he did not want me out of his life that long. Honoring my father’s request, I stayed in USA, still teaching for 50 years.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable teaching experiences is when I was giving my students a Christmas party and they were up walking around with cup cake icing and grape juice all around their little mouths, spreading laughter, and sharing gifts. One of my students came up to me with a teddy bear with one eye, no nose, one ear, dirty, and half dressed. She looked up at me and said, “I love you, Merry Christmas” and gave me the biggest hug ever. That special moment is one I will never forget.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With $25,000, I would buy my students more supplementary edu. materials, technology programs, etc…to be shared with colleagues/school: use money for field trips that students would not be able to go on otherwise; buy extra food for students who come in needing an extra meal; buy coats, clothes, belts, and shoes for students who need them; and help students discover their special talents in athletics, performing arts, band, robotics, etc. when parents don’t have the necessary funds to do so.
