As the child of an elementary school teacher and college professor, I can say that teaching is a passion that runs in my blood! I had a childhood friend with emotional challenges and I would always help her work through her obstacles. I also tutored friends starting in 6th grade, I was a natural helper and nurturer. I played “school” with friends and my sister and always envisioned myself as an educator. As an Af-Am I rarely saw myself in my teachers and I wanted to be that rolemodel for others.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceMy most memorable teaching experience was with one of my very first students 25yrs ago. She had severe issues with social anxiety and BiPolar disorder. She had several hospitalizations and hadn’t attended school in years. I worked continuously with her and she went from spending only 10 minutes a day in class up to a full day over several months. I tutored her outside of school as well, building trust with her. She ended up graduating top of her class and is now a broker on Wall Street in NYC.
What would you do with the $25,000?As a recent colon cancer survivor/thriver I have accrued expenses from medical bills not covered by insurance and other medical needs. I would pay off my medical bills and make a considerable contribution to the Colon Cancer Coalition to be used towards their colon cancer research. I would also work to raise awareness about colon cancer and prevention. I would also sponsor a local school in need and take a well needed vacation with my husband and two small children to Aruba or on a Cruise.
