Connect Tell us why you became a teacher

In high school, my art teacher, Nancy Crawford, had a profound impact on my life. She inspired me to become both an artist and an art teacher. Sadly, she passed away from a brain tumor, but her passion and charisma in the classroom will never be forgotten. Motivated by her example, I became a teacher to inspire the next generation of artists, helping students develop their portfolios and secure college scholarships, while encouraging them to harness their creativity in meaningful ways.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable teaching experiences was working with a student named Odin at the NPC Art Center. When he first joined, he was unsure of his abilities, but with encouragement and guidance, I helped him explore different techniques and pushed him to step outside his comfort zone. Over time, his confidence grew, and he began creating with purpose and passion. Seeing his transformation reaffirmed my belief in how art can inspire and empower students to discover their creative potential.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With $25,000, I would invest in opportunities that further my growth as an artist and educator. This would include funding artist residencies, application fees, as well as covering costs for art supplies, studio fees, and research for new creations. I’m currently working on an exhibition, which explores fearless expressions of LGBTQ+ identity and pride. My goal is for this work to inspire a more accepting society through its message of inclusivity and self-expression for my students at CHA.
