Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I wanted a career where I GOT to go to work- not HAD to go to work. I teach elementary music, and I love that my passion for music can be passed on to others! I feel like I have the best job in the world. I get to give students experiences, not just a class.I get to teach Math, English, Science and History all within my subject area, and to me that’s amazing.I became a teacher because a teacher inspired me, and I hope that I can do that for my students!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Twelve years ago, I had a group of first graders. They were special, one of those classes that touches your soul. I grew as a teacher as these kids grew in years and we had incredible music making together. Their fourth grade year, they sang “God Bless the U.S.A” and it brought me to tears. This year, those kids are seniors. Over the last few months, several of these former students have reached out to tell me how much I meant to them, that I made a difference. It doesn’t get more memorable!

What would you do with the $25,000?

Honestly, I’d pay off student loans and set up college plans for my two daughters. If there was any money left, I would wrestle with being smart and paying off part of our house or having a little fun and spending it on an experience for my family!
