Connect Tell us why you became a teacher

There was 1 turning point in my life that motivated me to become a teacher. It was the last day that I saw my Dad. He was a significant role model in my life. He commanded his role in the Air Force with such grace & morality. He served others in a way that inspired me to want to change lives. The last day I saw my Dad before he died, we had a conversation about how I failed my Praxis exam by a couple of points. He pulled me in close and said, "It's a small bump. You were meant to be a teacher."

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was regarding a student I had in 2nd grade. He struggled with attention issues that directly impacted his ability to learn to read. After hours of advocating, we got him the supports he needed through an IEP. Fast forward 10 years later, his parents reached back out to me to let me know that he got into college and in his part-time work was teaching kids how to play guitar. These success stories are my motivation to continue advocating for all my students.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would invest the money in my children's college savings fund and take my biggest supporter, My Mom, on a vacation. She has been there for me through 100% of my teaching journey. She has helped me set up every classroom, donated to my students needs, wiped my tears on the tough days, uplifted my spirits with a coffee drop off and continues to help me keep my Dad's legacy alive by giving back to others. I'd love to give back to her.
