Tell us why you became a teacher

The first big influence upon me to become a teacher was my mom. She worked as a public school teacher for 30 years and as I grew up, I witnessed the love she had for her career. I was later inspired to pursue a career in education by amazing teachers at my high school and by brilliant professors during college. I became a history teacher because I believe in the power of social studies to change minds and I love working with young people because they will shape the future of our world.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I used to teach for a non-profit organization in Houston, TX called Nameless Sound. There, I taught music to at-risk youth in shelters and community centers. I worked with homeless children and international refugees, teaching them musical skills related to improvisation. It was very special and so much fun to work with those kids! My time with Nameless Sound was an amazing journey that honed my skills as an educator and taught me about the healing power of music.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I want to grow in my career as a librarian by acquiring a MLIS degree, but have been apprehensive due to the cost. If I win, I would use a large portion of the money to help pay for tuition. In addition to being a librarian and teacher, I am a long-time musician, performer and recording artist. I would use some of the money to fund my music career. I have always wanted a pedal steel guitar, so I would get one of those! Lastly, I would save some of it and pay off my credit card balance.
