Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher after spending many summers at a sleep away camp as a counselor and group leader. I realized I had a gift for connecting with children and both thrived as a person and educator in their presence which in turn gave them the ability to blossom. Many teachers helped shape me as a young person and some literally saved my life by offering their unconditional support and guidance. Hopefully I have fulfilled that role for some of my students over the years.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

After 29 years in the classroom I have so many memorable moments. I would have to say one of my favorites is when a beloved student returned his senior year to be an intern in my second grade class. It was incredibly rewarding seeing him thrive and grow as a mentor to young people, as we continued to develop our connection.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Quite honestly and with no shame I would first pay off some debt. Next, I would winterize a tiny seaside cottage I own which would enable me to fulfill a lifelong dream of living there year-round upon retirement. Of course, I would continue my ongoing support for causes like education, LGBTQ rights and environmental issues that are near and dear to my heart.
