Katelyn Thompson

I have taught prek, 6th, 7th, and recently moved to an alternative school for EC 6-12. These kids just need someone to shine the light!

Tell us why you became a teacher

While in college, I watched my nieces and nephews struggle through school. I watched the brilliant, energetic, funny kids fail. Until one year, when the teacher recognized something. They struggled not only with adhd but with dyslexia as well! That teacher put accommodations in place to help the kids succeed. She taught them ways to trick their brain when reading, different font styles and colors to help them be successful. I wanted to be that teacher for someone.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

The behavior kids flocked to me. I always joked that I was the most protected teacher in school because anyone coming after me would have to get through my bodyguards first. I had one kid, he was just bad to the bone. Admin hated him, always in trouble. I worked hard with him all year. One day, something happened in the lunch room. He jumped up and left. The kid left and came to me to help solve the problem. In the past, he would have punched first and asked questions later. Such growth!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I work in a county with 50+% live below the poverty line. My kids are always hungry. Fresh fruit and cheese is their favorite. They know I always have a stock of healthy snacks in my fridge. I would also like to have a supply closet at my school for kids in need. From deodorant to clothes to school supplies. There is such a need for the county. On top of the county needs, are my own. Being a teacher, we don’t make the big bucks. I would pay some bills, and do something fun with my own kids.
