Tell us why you became a teacher

I grew up teaching my dolls in my bedroom with my portable chalkboard and books! That led to babysitting when I was old enough and my passion for working with kids and seeing how full of wonder they are, grew into knowing elementary education was what I was meant to pursue. I wanted to make a connection and impact in students' lives and be "that teacher" they always remember.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Just a few years ago I had the gift of having a student in my class who will forever be in my heart. She was a foster child and opened up to me about her biological dad and mom only a few days after school started. She struggled emotionally, academically and socially. She started the year reading 13 words per minute and only about 3 months later grew to about 50 plus words. Her confidence grew once someone believed in her and she knew I cared. Connection is crucial with learning.

What would you do with the $25,000?

It would help pay for my own two boys' education and pay off a little debt so I can retire with less stress!
