Jessica Regis

I love the “ah hah” moment, especially when students can connect what they’re learning to real life situations. I love laughing with them.

Tell us why you became a teacher

Both my parents were teachers, and they always inspired me with their seemingly limitless knowledge and passion. I grew up as a natural teacher all through school and realized that for me it was more than a job, or even a career, but instead it was a calling. It’s what I do, naturally, in nearly all aspects of my life. I love to continue learning on a regular basis, especially from my students. After nearly eighteen years in the classroom, I am still regularly inspired by my students’ insights.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

In 2012, I created a hands-on math program funded by a grant, taking students to a local boat shop. Thirteen years later, the program continues, supported by various grants. It integrates trigonometry, algebra, and experiential learning outside the classroom. Students explore their community and connect with peers while rowing on a river during math class. The program strives to answer the perennial question, “When will we ever use this?” and amazes me yearly with its impact on students.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Part of this money would have to fund my math and boat shop program - to pay forward the generosity that has been awarded to me for so many years. I also teach Personal Finance, so clearly I need to practice what I preach (or teach!) and invest some of that money wisely. I hope to pursue a second Master’s degree, to continue my quest in lifelong learning. Finally, I’m getting married this spring, and when I win the trip to Hawaii, some money would extend our well-deserved honeymoon!
