Tell us why you became a teacher

I really struggled in English class, and I thought I'd never understand the rules of grammar or the nuances of literature. Then, I had a teacher who made English class come alive. She made me want to go to class every day. She eventually became my mentor during student teaching. I thought if she could make such a big difference, maybe I could do the same for other struggling students.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I teach special education, and I had a non-verbal autistic student in class. We worked through pictures and a special keyboard so we could communicate. With two months left in the school year, he spoke to me. It was just a few whispered words, but over a decade later, those words stay in my heart. He trusted me, and that meant the world. This experience helped me value all forms of communication/self-expression, which helped me be a better mom and teacher. I always look for what isn't said.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would split the winnings between student loans, my students, and my colleagues. My students have experienced huge growths in their Lexile levels this year, and I'd love to reward them for their hard work! Finally, I would love to help colleagues in the district fulfill classroom wishlists and grant requests. Our teachers/staff are so dedicated, and I am blessed to work with such an amazing group of educators and leaders.
