I love teaching because I love growing kids’ minds. I love seeing the “aha” moments that happen when students figure something out.

I was in the 9th grade and was fascinated with plasma, the 4th state of matter. I wanted to do a science fair project featuring plasma but some teachers were discouraging, thinking that it was a topic way over my head. However, with my dad’s help, I built a plasma generator! He would explain content from quantum physics books to me in a way that I could comprehend. I realized then that I wanted to be a teacher and help others learn anything they wanted to as long as they put their mind to it!
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceOne of the most profound teaching experiences I’ve had involved a student who had struggled with 4th grade math and had very low self esteem. She loved Theatre and music so I developed teaching strategies that involved acting out problems. I also used music to help with memorization. She said to me, “Mrs. Horick, I’m not good at math, but you make it so much fun that I want to do well!” This is what teaching is all about.
What would you do with the $25,000?First, I would pay a few bills and finally pay off my student loans after 30 years of teaching! Next, I would like to build a place for our elementary school to have a student run vegetable and flower garden! A garden brings so many valuable learning opportunities! Finally, I’m not going to lie, I would take my family on a vacation, something we haven’t done in a very long time!
