Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I have always wanted to make a difference. I currently work with students with learning disabilities. I wanted to always be that teacher to make students recognize that they can learn regardless of the way they learn. Everyone learns at their own pace and I always wanted to give them a chance.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of the most memorable teaching experiences was when I was able to build rapport with my students and understand that in order to reach them academically is to understand them individually. The students I work with this year were able to pass state exams that they have not been able to pass over the last couple of years. Students learn when they feel understood and know their teacher cares about them as well as care about their future.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I believe I would use the money to help my family and my church. My brother passed away last year this time and he was the pastor. I am a minister and so is my sister in law and she bravely stepped in to take over the church where my brother pastored and founded. I want to be a help, support and a blessing to my church. Where we are in this world and the uncertainty of our economy, some family members are struggling to find work and pay bills. I plan to help where help is needed.
