Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher after a life-changing conference in Japan, where I saw the resilience of individuals with disabilities. Originally, I planned to pursue a career in medicine after earning my Physical Therapy degree, but that experience shifted my path. I realized my true calling was in special education. Now, 26 years later, I know I am where I belong. The best part is that I still use my first degree to support my students while empowering them to grow, thrive, and reach their full potential.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable moments was when a nonverbal student used his AAC device to communicate independently for the first time. After months of patience and encouragement, he pressed the icons to express his needs. It wasn’t just progress, it was empowerment. Every child deserves a voice and real-world experiences to use it. That belief pushed me to strengthen CBI efforts, helping students build confidence and independence beyond the classroom.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Part of the prize would help pay off my student loan, a promise I made to my late father. The rest would support my classroom, our CBI program, and the incredible paraeducators who help my students thrive. Most of all, I would honor my family, whose love, sacrifices, and support have shaped the teacher I am. This journey has never been mine alone. It is built on the people who have stood beside me.
