Connect Tell us why you became a teacher

Through my experiences as a mentor, summer art teacher, & scout leader at a small elementary school, I quickly developed a passion for supporting the next generation through education. After several people suggested I’d make an excellent teacher, I decided to pursue an alternative route to earn my teaching certification. This path allowed me to approach teaching in a way that felt authentic. My approach was shaped by real-world experiences and meaningful, real relationships with my students.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable teaching moments was with a student I taught years ago. He came in upset over a heartbreak, went to the restroom, and refused to come out. I asked if I could join him, and we had a heart-to-heart about life and how art can help process feelings. I chose to be truthful and empathetic with him. Years later, he shared this moment during his senior art show, saying it helped him find peace in creating 3D art. The article was published on the college’s blog!

What would you do with the $25,000?

As a new parent, I’d use some of the winnings to take my wife and me on a much-needed vacation to thank her for giving me the best gift—our daughter, Joy Elaine. After nearly 10 years of serving others’ children, I’d love to serve her with a break so we can recharge and continue being great parents. I’d also invest in our businesses—she’s a creative consultant and project manager, and I’m a freelance graphic designer.
