Connect Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because of a sixth-grade science lesson that deepened my love for learning and creativity. My teacher came dressed as her own pretend twin and we embarked on a wild adventure to research "macacataronipillars". These were, in reality, dyed macaroni scattered outside! Her unconventional approach taught me that learning can be exciting and unexpected. I realized the power of creativity in education and how, as a teacher, I could inspire curiosity and make lessons unforgettable.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable teaching experiences has been hosting a “wedding” for the letters Q and U to help my students remember they stick together to make one sound when reading and writing. Students played the roles of Q, U, wedding guests, flower kids, and ring bearers. Their joy and excitement as they actively participated made the lesson come to life. The celebration turned into a lasting memory that helped them understand a key phonics rule, and showed learning can be joyful and fun!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would purchase resources for all students, like STEM kits and high quality math and reading materials. I’d fund cupboards for our school pantry to organize supplies for those in need. Finally, I’d use part of the funds to ease financial pressure on my family of 10, allowing me to focus more on teaching and quality time with my 8 children without the burden of medical debt and other expenses. This support would empower my students and my own children to thrive.
