Jacquelyn Straton

Teaching is my passion. I love making a positive impact on my students’ lives and hearing them say they love science for the first time.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because my English teacher showed me that he cared at a time in my life when I was really struggling. I want to be that safe space for my students to tell me they are having a hard time and offer empathy like my teacher did. I want to guide them to the right resources for help. I love starting each day with an engaging question or activity and creating lessons that engage students and allow them to think critically. I have so much joy in seeing my students thrive.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

There are too many to count! I keep all my students’ letters where they have thanked me for either sparking their passion in science, helping them build social emotional skills, supporting them or showing up for them in fun ways like creating new games that have everyone on their feet excited to learn.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would love to pay off my student loans, buy a telescope to learn more about the stars and enjoy a trip where I can learn more about animals and sustainability to share what I learn with my students.
