Heidi Faseler

As a special education PreK and K teacher, I get to help kids achieve "firsts"-- first steps, words, using the potty, on top of academics.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a special education teacher because I have a deep-rooted passion for helping disabled people through love, education, and advocacy. I began volunteering in community groups serving people with disabilities when I was 12 years old. I love teaching Early Childhood Special Education because I get to provide children with an encouraging first experience with school, advocating for my students to receive all the support they need while being a resource to my students’ families.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My teaching experience has been filled with so many positive experiences that it feels impossible to choose just one. The most joyous memories are of each student who has had a “first” in my classroom. Many students have spoken their first word, taken their first steps, and learned to use the restroom for the first time in my class. Every time a student achieves a “first”, I cry happy tears and we celebrate! I love teaching skills that will help my students be as independent as possible.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would put the $25,000 towards my graduate studies. I am seeking to earn graduate degrees to study to the point of expertise in the fields of autism and psychology. I want to author books educating about and providing representation of disability for children and adults. I’m hoping to advocate for disability rights and education reform on a widespread scale. I also want to create a developmentally appropriate social skills and sex education curriculum for use in special education classrooms.
