It’s so rewarding. I love to see the “lightbulbs” go on. I love learning about each student individually and getting to know their families.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because when I was in 6th grade I had a classmate from Laos. I was chosen to help him learn English. It was so much fun. Then, as I got older, I helped kids in my neighborhood with their homework. It was such a great feeling to know I was helping people.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience this year were Hispanic and Native American Heritage months. In addition to teaching my students about these cultures, I also brought in guest speakers with activities planned. My students worked with a local artist to paint sugar skulls. They were taught a Native American dance and wore outfits that we had donated. They were also able to make clay pots, drink horchata, and eat pan dulce. My students said, “These are the best days of school ever!”

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I had to use the money toward my classroom, I would definitely take my students on field trips because they are so deserving. Buses are so expensive. We used to go on 4 field trips a year in 4th grade but post COVID prices have gone up so much that we can only do one a year. If I can use it personally, I would take my family on a Disney Cruise and complete home improvements.
