Tell us why you became a teacher

When I was in Second Grade, my house burnt down. This traumatic event sparked my interest in becoming an elementary school educator. At this age, you begin to connect trauma and events that may be out of your control. Families go through unfortunate events and challenging times. I believe that 7/8 year olds have a strong love for learning at this age and when things come up, it’s easier when there is support and love not only at home but school as well. It’s my goal to be that caring teacher.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Something I strongly value and enjoy are the times where students get the “ah-ha” moment inside the classroom. A few weeks ago, I celebrated a student on her recall and boosted confidence during a phonics lesson. Her excitement toward phonemes during this lesson gave me the idea to have “teachers” during this time. I began asking for volunteers beyond to demonstrate their understanding using their own vocabulary. Student led approach is needed and continues to make memorable experiences daily.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Over the last several years, I have worked hard to further my education. Months ago, I received my Master’s Degree in Education. Because I chose this path, I have been very focused in on my goals and haven’t been able to save in the way in which I wish. I would love to take a vacation and celebrate my accomplishments and determination over this time. I would love to take my parents with me because of their support they have given my entire journey of bettering myself. A dream come true!
