Tell us why you became a teacher

I’ve always had a passion for history and helping others. Every day is unique, providing new opportunities and challenges. I am my own boss. I get to mold and shape young minds. The students inspire me with their insights and character. They provide so many wholesome and rewarding moments. To guide them on the journey of life is a gift. My favorite part is when they come back to visit to tell me what their lives are like now. I truly believe I am in the perfect job. It does not feel like work.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One year I had a student who was incredibly quiet. She would express herself through drawing — and she was good. During class I would let her sketch. I could tell this was her outlet and it was something she needed to do. Each day I would greet her with a “hello”. At most, I would get a head nod. On the last day of school she came up to me and gave me a portrait of myself. My reaction caused her to light up with joy. It was the first time I saw her smile. I still have the portrait on my fridge.

What would you do with the $25,000?

The $25,000 would be life-changing. I would like to use that money to help my family. They helped me get through college. They also helped me so much during times of my life where I was wayward and lost. They never gave up on me and I would like to repay the favor. Thank you for this opportunity and for considering me. Bill Nye has always been a masterclass of sincerity and integrity for my generation. It is my pleasure to be a part of this contest with him and so many deserving educators.
