Inspiring “light bulb moments” for my students! There is truly no better feeling.

I was lucky to learn about the world of science through my father, a former geologist. He took my siblings and I to see different geological marvels around the country, while making the ordinary become extraordinary for us. His excitement about science helped me recognize my own passion for sharing knowledge and inspiring others, and is a huge part of why I became a science teacher. I have always appreciated the unique ability teachers have to empower their students and inspire curiosity!
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceIn my first year of teaching, I had many parents who were a bit nervous when their student was placed in my class. During the last round of conferences, one parent tearfully told me how much of an impact I had on her son's success in math that year and thanked me with a hug. Years later, the same parent walked in to my classroom and exclaimed "YES! WE GOT MS. FOLKMAN!" as her younger daughter walked in to join my class. It was a small, but incredibly meaningful moment that I have kept with me.
What would you do with the $25,000?It's no secret that teachers don't teach for the money and the fame! My partner and I have began the stressful search for a home, and I would use part of the money as a down payment. Additionally, many schools are not granted adequate funding for science programs and supplies, and I would love to donate the remainder to assisting schools with these needed resources.
