Tell us why you became a teacher

When I graduated from college, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I explored for four years before taking community college to take a class about teaching art to young children. The class revolutionized my thoughts about learning. The class taught me to focus on the process rather than the product. I had my AHA moment! Teaching middle school is the best job in the world! I can integrate my passion for learning and teach real world concepts related to science, math, engineering and technology.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My teaching career started in elementary education. After two years, I switched to middle school teaching math and science. After a few years, I was asked if I wanted to teach a sixth grade coding elective. I jumped at the opportunity. During my first year, my students and I found coding magical. The idea of being able to tell a computer what to do and see the results immediately was so fun! They learned how to create images, make webpages, and create simple games. It was a very memorable year!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I spend an average of $1200 a year on materials, food, and supplies. If I had $25,000, I would continue to provide my students what they need to be successful in my classroom, school, and in their own homes. I will use some to take my students on field trips or have special programs come to my classroom. Then, I would donate the rest of it to the PTSA so more classrooms can benefit from the funds.
