Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher to create real change that impacts the future of our society. I recognized the support and encouragement that key teachers provided for me, and I wanted to honor them by doing the same for others. The specific content I wanted to teach was math. I had some bad math teachers as a student, and my goal was to become part of a system that helped make mathematics a more comfortable content area. I also had a strong desire to make a difference in the world, causing positive change.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience doesn't happen in the classroom. I love and appreciate it when students return as peers rather than students and share reflective stories regarding the impact my middle school math or ASB class had on them throughout their high school experience. I also get a chance to hear about how successful they have become. I know I was only involved for a short part of their school experience, but I like to think that what I taught or said made a difference.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I were given $25,000, I would take my family to Disneyland in Paris. This would be a fun way to have a new cultural experience while still doing something that we love. Any remaining money would be used as a down payment to buy a new car to replace my 20-year-old van. I have been gimping this van along for over a year now and would love to not have to worry about whether or not I will make it to work and back home each day.
