I was blessed to grow up in a community with exceptional teachers and opportunities. Just minutes away, however, the picture was starkly different—90% passing state tests in one area, but only 9% in another. This disparity inspired my mission to ensure all kids have access to quality, rigorous, and compassionate education. With three generations of educators in my family, I’ve had their support and inspiration fueling my work every step of the way!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable teaching moments came a year after pushing a gifted student—a star athlete, writer, and leader—who wasn’t reaching her full potential. I worried I’d pushed too hard. A year later, she answered a survey asking about her favorite teacher and why. She wrote, “Ms. Unger, because she is literally made of love.” That response will forever stay in my heart & mind — on the good days & the hardest ones.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I’ve been pursuing my dreams—paying for grad school, balancing a leadership role, and saving for a move—leaving no time or budget for a honeymoon after my wedding last August. This money would first fund a meaningful honeymoon, then help me pay for a home, AND would provide a MOST significant contribution to building a vast school-wide library my students deserve.
