Alexus

I love teaching because I am able to see the talents of amazing students. Talents they did not know that they had.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because for years I actually said that I never wanted to teach. I was always afraid of what would happened because of what the U.S. has been going through such as school shootings and other forms of violence. As an African American woman, I knew that I wanted to give back to my community in a way that was not going to be excused. Once I became confident, I made up my mind to be a teacher. Reaching the minds of tomorrow became my end goal and the more I teach, more I love it!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was my very first year. It was my hardest year but I learned so much about the students and the new city of Baltimore, Maryland. I am originally from Virginia but I wanted to move out of state. Teaching has taught me so much and I am grateful for the good and bad times. It’s all worth it when students wheels began to turn in their mind and you see them gain confidence they never knew they had.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would give back to my school, Frederick Douglass High. We need more supplies, books, and repairs to our main location need to be done.
