Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I have a passion for children and a servant heart. Whether it was babysitting, working at a daycare/summer camp, vacation bible school, or teaching for the past 25 years, I have always wanted to make a difference with children. I have a genuine love for learning and sharing this with my students. The way they grow academically and personally is the most rewarding experience!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

During my student teaching, I was assigned to work with a 4th grade student. He would comply, but never spoke. I worked with him every Wednesday. As I asked questions and shared things about me, he would work but never speak. Months literally went by and no conversation on his part. On October 7th, the day before my birthday, he wished me happy birthday. I was SHOCKED! He had experienced a major trauma that summer and lost his mom. He thanked me for talking with him and not giving up on him.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Wow, $25,000! First off, I would love to be able to provide snacks for my students. Food insecurity is a real issue with families, and if I could help provide a snack for the day I know it will help students with their attention and focus. Second, I would love to be able to provide materials that are needed for experiments within our 5th grade science standards. Our science focus is to offer more hands-on opportunities for students to develop and increase their critical thinking skills.
