Connect Tell us why you became a teacher

I spent my childhood holding class for all my stuffed toys and many cousins. My family dreamed for me to one day become a teacher even through my explorations in the careers of space and even archeology. I imagined a life of adventure like the ones I saw in movies and books. It was in college that I began working at the campus preschool and met the teacher who would become my mentor. She helped me renew my passion for teaching others and seeing the great adventures found in inspiring others.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

In my 25 years of teaching there are so many beautiful stories that fill my heart. My most cherished memories are when I get to see my past students after elementary school. Hearing about their newest adventures and memories of the time we spent learning together. I am reminded again and again of my reason to be.

What would you do with the $25,000?

As an elementary theater teacher, I have been very lucky to use the school stage as both a classroom and performance space. Through grants and arts funding I have transformed a once underused space into a place where creativity is fostered daily. With $25,000 I hope to bring more art experiences and performances to my students. Most of these experiences are beyond their families affordability, so if I can bring the adventures to them I will.
