William Turner

I love watching kids get something for the first time. I love it when that struggling student gives you that smile that says, “I did it.”

Tell us why you became a teacher

To be honest, when I went to college I wasn’t certain what I wanted to do. It wasn’t until the end of my sophomore year that I decided to go into education. I had an opportunity to teach wrestling to kids in a detention home and found that I enjoyed it.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I had so many memorable experiences, but one that stands out was in my first year in Norfolk, VA, teaching in a tough junior high school. I was really struggling and I wasn’t certain I was cut out for teaching. My supervisor observed me one day and then sat down with me and doled out some tough words, but also some practical advice if I wanted to keep teaching. I took his advice and it made a difference.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I won $25K, I would use it to help a few folks out because truthfully, since getting sober eleven years ago and being given a second chance at doing what I love, I have been daily learning how to be content in any situation with what I have.
