That feeling you have when a new concept clicks for a child, is just magical. I’m so lucky to be an early childhood educator for 25 years.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I come from a long line of teachers including my ancestor grandma Whatmough. She was an immigrant from Ireland then a pioneer who started the first school in our state through bartering. I grew up watching my mother teach and I wanted to be just like her. I started Chrysalis Preschool and Kindergarten in 2004 When my daughter Suzy was three years old and my daughter Roxy a newborn in my arms. I have always wanted to be a teacher and to have my own school and be home with my children.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My school enrollment is open to all children, with all needs and abilities. I have three children with disabilities. I know how important it is to have teachers who understand your child and give them the best support. Last year I had the opportunity to teach a child who was nonverbal along with my own son who is nonverbal. Every new technique I was learning for my son, I was able to use to teach and learn with this sweet little guy. He started communicating with the other children on his own

What would you do with the $25,000?

I own a historic building in the downtown area of our city. I got it ten years ago, it had been sitting vacant after being abandoned for two years. It took us almost a year to renovate it, and now it is our school, with several different spaces for learning. We have a huge yard that we want to turn into a garden, for our students along with a nicer playground and a taller fence due to our location. This would be a dream come true
