Viviana Barens Morales

Growing up with ADHD, I struggled in school. Now I teach to build confidence, embrace differences, and help every student succeed.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because education changed my life. I want to support students, help them find their voice, and realize their potential. I’m passionate about bilingual learners, helping them succeed academically while honoring their language and culture. Teaching allows me to make a difference—not just in what students learn, but in how they see themselves and their future.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable experiences was teaching Ethan in third grade 11 years ago. Last year, I had the privilege of seeing him graduate from high school. Witnessing his growth from a curious child to a young adult reminded me that teaching is about more than lessons—it’s about seeing potential, forming connections, and knowing I played a part in helping students become the people they are meant to be.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If awarded $25,000, I would use it to pursue my Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, focusing on Language, Diversity, and Literacy, to better support bilingual and diverse learners. I would also continue helping animals by fostering and working at a shelter. This funding would allow me to grow as an educator while giving back to my community in meaningful ways, combining my passions for education and compassion.
