Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I wanted to be able to connect with students. I specifically chose to teach art because Art is my passion. Art connects us beyond what we see and into our sense of self. I love teaching in high school because I get to have conversations about art, life and life after high school. When students leave my classroom my hopes is that they are better, not just in art but in their thinking about life. My hope is for all students to succeed, be happy, pursue their dreams.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Last year I had a group of students that were like latch babies. Where I went they were there. There were about 5 of them and they graduated last year. They had been with me since freshmen year. Seeing them cross the stage was like watching my own children succeed. Now one is expecting and I have been included in all celebrations. I’m now like the adopted grandma. Although I’m too young, it’s still an honor. I know it comes from a place of love and respect. That’s a joy that’s indescribable.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Winning $25,000 would mean so much to me. I would take a much deserved vacation to Paris, France, my dream place. I want to see the Louvre, sit at a cafe, drink tea, and watch the people go by. I want to sketch the scenes, paint the views and visit the Eiffel Tower. If I had money left in the budget I would travel over to Italy and get some amazing fresh pasta and visit more museums. And with whatever was left I would put towards my graduate degree program that I’m currently in.
