I became a teacher to serve the youth of my community. I wanted to care for students, to be a role model for them and guide them to reach their fullest potential. I loved school growing up, especially when it was time for reading and math. I became a teacher to share that passion with any student I came in contact with. I want them to see the importance of learning those skills for the benefit of their future.

My most memorable teaching experience was the Read Across America project we had this year. In theme with “Oh the Places You’ll Go” , students were assigned to create a poster for and dress up as what they wanted to be when they grow up. I loved seeing all of their costumes and hearing their aspirations. They enjoyed sharing their career dreams with our entire school community in a parade around the building, where all other classes stood in the hallway to cheer them on.

After being a survivor of youth homelessness, I would use the $25,000 to purchase my first home- making me a first generation home owner. I would use remaining funds to invest in my classroom and current students’ resource needs. I’d also set up a cozy corner in my room.
