Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I believe school can change the direction of a child’s life. As a proud Latina of Mexican descent, education has always meant more than academics to me—it represents opportunity, sacrifice, resilience, and hope. I carry with me the stories of family members who worked hard, who believed in the power of schooling, and who dreamed bigger for the next generation. That legacy lives in my classroom every day.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable moments has been launching Writer’s Workshop and watching my students’ stories come to life. Seeing hesitant writers grow confident and proud of their voices is powerful. But it’s the in-between moments I treasure most—the quiet conferences, the laughter over word choices, the deep conversations about feelings and family. When a child says, “Listen to this part,” I’m reminded that writing is more than a skill—it’s connection, courage, and identity.

What would you do with the $25,000?

$25,000 would make a life-changing difference for my family and me. It would give me the opportunity to invest wisely and create long-term stability, while also easing the financial burdens my elderly parents carry. Being able to support them the way they have supported me would mean everything. It’s not just about money—it’s about security, gratitude, and honoring the sacrifices they’ve made for our family.
