Tell us why you became a teacher

It was in the beginning of COVID and I realized that my children deserved a better education than sitting behind a computer; but I didn’t know what I could do. So I enrolled in college again and started my path to teaching. While subbing in different schools, at different grade levels, I realized what I wanted to do and teach! I chose to teach my love, MATH! I started in 8th grade and just recently transitioned to high school! I’m so happy to be able to serve others again.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

A new 7th gd. student came to my class mid 2nd qtr. She had just moved from the UK, spoke very little to no English. I began trying to make a connection, build trust & find accommodations like translating assignments, working with ESOL, trying to avoid adding stress after a big transition. Dec. was our 2nd state assessment. She scored a low 2 (1-5), continuing to thrive, scored a 3 by the EOY! Next school year she was in my 8th gd. class. Leaving 8th gd. she reached a 5! Her smile said it all!

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I were blessed enough to win I would take some of it and help pay down any debt I can, save some for an emergency, and try to open a Home School service, where I can teach our local youth in my community that are in the cattle and farming community. They often have to transition to online to compete in shows and more. I’d be able to provide real face to face, in person, instruction that supports their education and their passion, or family legacy.
