Tell us why you became a teacher

I initially became a teacher for the flexible schedule that allowed me to support my own family. But it quickly evolved into something deeper—a genuine passion for supporting students who lack the resources and emotional support they need. I realized I could make a real difference in their lives by creating a safe, nurturing environment where every student feels valued and equipped to succeed.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My Black History Month project, where students create a college or university honoring someone who made an impact in Black history. What made it unforgettable was watching students have "aha moments"—discovering lesser-known figures and realizing that impact isn't limited to famous names. They understood that anyone can make a difference and create a ripple effect. Seeing that shift in perspective, where students recognized themselves as potential changemakers, was transformative.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I'd prioritize taking care of my dad, who's a widower and means everything to me. With what remains, I'd finally take the trip I've dreamed about—Greece, specifically Santorini, or somewhere tropical with crystal-clear waters and a hut over the ocean. It's about investing in the people I love and creating those irreplaceable memories that matter most.
