I discovered my love of teaching in 3rd grade when I became strong in math and began helping lead small groups in the back of the classroom. From that moment on, I knew it was my calling. I have always loved school and the joy of learning, and I wanted to help make it fun for others. Nothing compares to seeing a student’s a-ha moment—when understanding clicks and you can see the confidence light up in their face.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

This year I have six students who speak four different languages, two brand new to the country. It often takes me back to 2017, when I taught my first non-English-speaking student, a quiet 2nd grader who changed me as a teacher. She taught me patience, creativity, and the power of connection beyond words. Today, while helping my multilingual students at my desk, I received an email from her asking if I still remembered her. I always will.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would share this award with my teacher bestie, the steady rock behind so many of my accomplishments. She championed my conservation work on school campuses, helping me earn Environmental Educator of the Year, and supported me through my master’s degree. My portion would continue growing our educational garden and expanding native schoolyard habitats across the state, creating living classrooms that deepen science learning right outside each school’s doors.
