Tell us why you became a teacher

Every day, I get to shape how kids see themselves as learners. One encouraging teacher can change how a child feels about school—or about themselves—for years. I know this is true because I had a teacher that did just that. Jean Bowden was more than my homeroom teacher. She saved my life. I was a very lonely 13 year old in a new country and new school with zero friends. I missed home, my family, and friends. She saw me struggling and one day just sat with me. My life was changed.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My first years teaching, I was in a self-contained classroom for children with special needs. I loved this experience and it taught me a lot about how to teach and teach exceptional children, make connections with children who are non-verbal, and building relationships with families. These experiences have helped me in the general education classroom when supporting all children with various abilities and making connections with students and families.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would pay off bills and put a down payment on a house. I am a single mom and to have a house for my daughter would be a dream come true. It’s something we’ve wanted for a very long time.
