Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because of my cousin Lilly. Seeing her navigate life with cerebral palsy showed me that with the right support and services, every student can succeed regardless of their starting point. She inspired me to be the advocate that students like her deserve. In my middle school Special Education classroom, I love witnessing the grit and growth that follow every breakthrough. I teach to ensure my students realize that their potential is truly limitless.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

This year, I taught a transfer student labeled as "difficult." At his old school, he was often pacified with a soda in the office just to keep him quiet. I refused to lower the bar. I invested in him personally but held him to rigorous standards, never letting him "just get by." The shift was incredible: he went from constant office referrals to a star student earning 100s on tests. He told me I’m his favorite teacher because I finally saw his potential instead of just managing his behavior.

What would you do with the $25,000?

A significant portion would go toward paying off the credit card and personal debt I’ve accrued while teaching on a limited salary. Relieving this burden is essential for me to stay in the classroom long-term. I would invest the rest directly back into my classroom and school to provide the "extra help" my SpEd students need to succeed. Inspired by my cousin Lilly, I want to ensure my students have every resource necessary to reach the independence I’m so proud to see at graduation.
