Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because school was the only place that ever felt safe to me. I grew up with a negligent mother and lost my father to suicide when I was 11. Everything felt unstable, but school was constant. Teachers noticed me, protected me, and believed in me when no one else did. I teach because I want to be that person for a child who feels alone.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was realizing a student felt safe enough to finally be themselves in my classroom. Watching a child who once shut down begin to trust, participate, and smile reminded me that teaching isn’t just about content. It’s about being a steady, caring adult. I know how much that matters, because it once mattered to me.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use the $25,000 to create a classroom where students feel safe, cared for, and worthy of opportunity. It would help me provide books, supplies, and experiences for children who often go without. I would also use it to pursue a master’s degree in education so I can better understand and support students carrying pain into the classroom. This investment would allow me to give my students what I once needed most.
