Taryn Hilts-Hoskins

I love teaching because I can be a positive adult in kids’ lives, and they bring positivity into mine too. Helping them learn and grow.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because school has always felt like a special place to me. Growing up, my mom was a teacher, so I was surrounded by the world of education from an early age. Even though I loved being at school, learning didn’t always come easily for me. I struggled at times, but I was fortunate to have teachers who believed in me and were willing to put in extra time and effort to help me succeed. Their patience and support made a huge difference in my life. Those experiences shaped who I am.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable moments teaching was during my first year as a 4th grade teacher. At the end of the year, my students surprised me by writing me letters and putting them together all on their own. Opening those letters and reading their thoughts and kind words made me realize the impact I had on them. Knowing that my first class of 4th graders felt inspired enough to do something so thoughtful is a moment I will never forget—it showed me that teaching truly matters.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I won the $25,000 scholarship, I would use it to bring more hands-on learning to my 4th grade classroom. Many students don’t get enough interactive experiences in science and social studies, so I’d fund field trips and materials that make lessons real and engaging. These experiences help students explore, participate, and understand concepts better, while making learning exciting and meaningful every day.
