Tell us why you became a teacher

In 8th grade an assessment suggested I was suited for psychology or teaching, and that insight stayed with me. I later served as an Air Force medic and became a mother, both roles rooted in caring for others. I didn't begin teaching until I was 40, but it is the only career I've ever had that I still look forward to after 18 years. Growing up in turbulence added an edge of empathy that many don't possess. Teaching allows me to ease struggle, inspire growth, and witness the joy of understanding.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable experiences began after PD where I learned to assess stream health using biotic data. My school had a stream on campus, & I regularly took my Earth Science students outside to conduct real water-quality studies. We collected specimens and even hatched monarchs. When some emerged with wing deformities, I showed students how careful trimming could help them fly. Their amazement coupled with seeing 2 students become future environmental stewards was unforgettable.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would love to create pollinator gardens, become a certified monarch migration waystation to support research and conservation at my school, and supplement my science lab with materials and equipment that would encourage more hands on and interactive science investigations. I would also love to provide scholarships for students who may be unable to fund field trips or international travel as I organize science-based summer travel through educational tour companies.
