I enjoy introducing the students to innovative ways of expressing themselves and opening up their minds to new concepts and creative ideas.

Tell us why you became a teacher

As a single mother, I needed to earn an income while completing my bachelor’s degree, so I began substitute teaching. Through that experience, I discovered how much I loved watching students learn, grow, and explore new concepts. Introducing children to new ideas, strategies, and ways of thinking gave me a deep sense of purpose. What began as a practical decision became my passion, and I realized that teaching was not just a job for me, but my calling.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was serving as a special education teacher in a Behavioral Disorder classroom. While the role came with many challenges, it also gave me the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in my student’s life. I worked closely with a 12-year-old student who was reading on a kindergarten level, and I began providing focused one-on-one instruction in phonemic awareness and phonics. Through consistency, and targeted support, the student progressed two grade levels

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use the $25,000 to create an interactive literacy space where students can hear, see, read, and act out stories. The space would look like a giant open book, allowing students to step inside the setting of each story. Themes and settings would change weekly to match new books. This would make reading more engaging, build comprehension, and give students meaningful opportunities to connect with characters and text.
