I became a teacher because I AM CURIOUS. Curiosity turns doubt into confidence. When students start asking questions, they begin to see themselves confidently, not just as learners, but as CURIOUS SCIENTISTS and problem-solvers. LEARNING feels ALIVE when I teach because I choose REAL-WORLD CHALLENGES like testing water quality or SOLVING engineering PROBLEMS around OUR school. My GOAL is simple: help students DISCOVER their CURIOSITY and use science to shape their communities, and the FUTURE.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceMy most memorable teaching experience was when students applied chemistry to assess overall water quality of Village Creek, a 41-mile waterway that flows through Birmingham, Al to our school. Years of urban runoff and industry have harmed its health. When students measured pH, turbidity, and other indicators to understand the cause, they also suggested improvements. Even hesitant students quickly became curious as science became more than a lesson; it became an environmental stewardship moment.
What would you do with the $25,000?I would launch the “Magic City Science Bus,” a mobile STEM lab bringing applied chemistry, robotics, and environmental research to all 99 Birmingham neighborhoods. Students would engage in hands-on science where they live, building pride and opportunity. Funds would support program sustainability and student internships so this impact continues long-term. A portion would also provide personal financial stability, ensuring I can lead this work with focus and longevity.
