Tell us why you became a teacher

I knew in third grade as I looked up from the carpet and watched as Miss Rosmary Brame read Where the Red Fern Grows, with all the voices and excitement. I knew then that I wanted to teach. I wanted to read and share books with children. I wanted to grow them as readers and help them love reading and learning. I am in my 35th year of my career, and I am often asked, "Why don't you retire?" Plain and simple, Teaching isn't my job, it's my passion. Making a difference, one book at a time!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I think it occurred during Covid. Our school was closed and we taught remotely. I loved logging in each morning and seeing those 26 squares looking back at me. We read a lot of books and continued together on our learning journey. That year was not easy, but those kids had grit and determination and they grew as readers and had some of the best reading scores. That year taught me that the four walls don't define you as a teacher Each day was a new adventure together with each turn of the page.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I has $ 25,000 I would buy a book machine for my school . I would also create a learning library in my school where parents could check out materials to grow their reader at home. I would create book bins tied to learning standards that could be utilized in classrooms If possible I would create a mini bus roving library. Thats my dream. To roll through neighborhoods and read to kids but also give away books or offer a check out system. I would spread a love for reading 📚!
